Christopher and His Kind

Based on Christopher Isherwood’s critically acclaimed memoir I Am a Camera and his extraordinary Berlin novels, previously immortalised in the film Cabaret, Christopher and His Kind is the story of an Englishman abroad – and pre-war Berlin naturally proves more welcoming to a 20-something gay man than England.

The thriving bohemian scene proves to be momentous for Isherwood, in both his professional and personal life. He meets Jean Ross, the inspiration for Sally Bowles, and falls in love with a young street cleaner named Heinz. But as the Nazis gain power, Christopher is forced to make some uncomfortable choices. Kevin Elyot’s intelligent script and Matt Smith’s sensitive performance as the young Isherwood both met with acclaim when the drama was first broadcast in 2011.
